Before shopping for fall decorations, look at what is already tucked away. A warm-colored cushion, a serving dish, or a favorite throw can change the mood of a room without filling it with more things.

Choose one small area to refresh: the entry table, a reading chair, or the dining table. Repeat a color in two places and leave some empty space around the pieces you display.

If you do buy something, decide where it will live before bringing it home. A useful mug or a well-loved seasonal detail can be more satisfying than a roomful of new decorations.
