A Valentine's gathering can celebrate friendship as warmly as romance. Invite a few people for tea, a simple lunch, or dessert, and let the table feel personal rather than perfectly coordinated.
Choose a small color palette before pulling things from the cupboard. White dishes, red napkins, and one vase of flowers can provide all the decoration you need. Heart-shaped dishes are charming if you already have them, but an ordinary plate works beautifully too.
Write a short note for each guest. A remembered kindness or a shared laugh means more than a generic message. Fold the notes beside the napkins, or let guests take them home in an envelope. Keep a few blank cards ready for anyone who wants to write one in return.
For food, choose something you can prepare without spending the whole visit in the kitchen. Serve drinks where guests can reach them, and make room on the table for cups and conversation. Leave tall decorations on a sideboard so everyone can see one another.
The original photographs collect playful ideas from an earlier season. Borrow a detail—a little bird, a love-letter motif, a cheerful plate—and make it your own. The best part of the occasion is the time together, long after the dishes have been put away.
